MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION MALAYSIA (MBAM) ATTENDS THE 45TH INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF ASIAN AND WESTERN PACIFIC CONTRACTORS’ ASSOCIATIONS (IFAWPCA) CONVENTION 2022

MBAM President, Mr. Oliver HC Wee receiving a plaque from IFAWPCA President, Mohamed Ali for successfully organizing the 44th IFAWPCA convention in Kuala Lumpur in 2018

Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) with a delegation of 22 representatives attended the 45th International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors’ Association (IFAWPCA) Convention on 15th–19th November 2022, at Paradise Island Resort, Maldives. It has been 4 years since MBAM last hosted the IFAWPCA convention back in 2018 and 2 decades before that in 1998.

The IFAWPCA Convention 2022 which was officiated by the Vice President of Maldives, Faisal Naseem brought the theme “Construction with Conservation- Build a Better World”. The exploration and adoption of green construction options in the construction sector was highlighted as a key element in the fight against climate change.

MBAM Secretary General Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz was the Chief Delegate for MBAM where he presented the country report for Malaysia.  MBAM also chaired 2 committees during the IFAWPCA convention. MBAM Immediate Past President, Tan Sri Sufri chaired the Builders Award Committee whereas I chaired the Conditions of Contract Committee.

The Conditions of Contract Committee meeting also saw major discussions on the fluctuation of material prices which was expected to rise during the first quarter of 2023 as a result of the reopening of the Chinese economy and the prolonged Ukraine war. In order to foster a more sustainable way of contracting and further minimising the cost of doing business, specific mechanisms must be provided under the contracts, especially for private contracts.

MBAM also hopes that the incoming government will relook its economic strategy in order to facilitate the construction industry’s recovery towards economic growth.

OLIVER HC WEE
President, MBAM
