For the past few decades or so, we have represented Malaysia’s construction industry as its voice during various key phases. Dedicated towards promoting and developing the construction industry in Malaysia, MBAM has evolved into a cohesive umbrella organisation. We have earned international recognition through our affiliations with the International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors’ Associations (IFAWPCA) and the ASEAN Constructors Federation (ACF). We have also successfully hosted the 20 th , 29 th and 44 th IFAWPCA Conventions in 1983, 1998 and 2018 respectively. Through the memberships in IFAWPCA and ACF, the MBAM members are part of the international construction fraternity. MBAM is also a member of The Building Industry Presidential Council (BIPC), where members comprise of Presidents from Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM), Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (REHDA), Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM). The formation of BIPC is a quantum leap in terms of cooperation among the industry players in the country to look into the interest of the construction industry from a wide spectrum of trades. MBAM members are also from entities that are directly and indirectly linked to the construction industry. This includes specialist sub-contractors, building material suppliers, manufacturers and trading companies. With both local and international presence, MBAM is well poised to effectively represent the Malaysian construction industry as a single, unifying voice to the relevant government authorities as well as various organisations and bodies. We are aware of rising construction court cases and the high legal fees that can accumulate with such court disputes. In light of this and to mitigate the risk factor that legal action would normally incur stiff legal fees, we at MBAM feel that we should play a role to assist members with an alternative dispute resolution mechanism. As such, we officially launched the MBAM Mediation Services on 10 July 2019 with the aid of a panel of 11 expert mediators who are willing to contribute their time and expertise. We hope that with mediation, we would be able to not only resolve disputes but also preserve and re-establish relationships of the two disputing parties. But to be successful, there must be a mutual commitment by all parties to make the process work. Innovate to Build Safer The spate of reported landslides at worksites in Penang resulted in over ten fatalities in the past two years and MBAM felt that there was an urgent need to address the issue of effective safety management. Concerned over these mishaps, MBAM recently organised the first Penang International Construction Conference with the theme ‘Safety and Innovation’ in collaboration with the Penang Master Builders & Building Materials Dealers Association on 18-19 July 2019. There, expert speakers shared ways to harness the power of innovation to make worksites safer. Read more about the event in this issue. 65 th MBAM Anniversary Dinner Approximately 1,600 persons gathered to celebrate the 65 th MBAM Anniversary Dinner, held at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. The dinner was graced and officiated by YB Dr. Xavier Jayakumar, Minister of Water, Land and Natural Resources, Malaysia. Themed ‘Improving Competitiveness through Digitalisation’, the association strives to make a change by advocating the importance to remain competitive in today’s business world while continuing to grow and evolve. At the dinner, MBAM presented various awards to outstanding performers in recognition of their exemplary leadership and meritorious contributions towards the development of an effective contractors’ association in particular, and the construction industry in general. A new category of award, namely the Construction Industry Trade Awards (CITA) were also presented this year. Do read in detail about the award-winning individuals and companies in this information-packed issue. Happy Reading! Yours sincerely, Foo Chek Lee JMW MBAM President We feel that the industry should be allowed to conduct its own training under a government’s incentive scheme.
