For the past few decades, we have represented Malaysia’s construction industry as its voice during various key phases. Dedicated towards promoting and developing the construction industry in Malaysia, MBAM has evolved into a cohesive umbrella organisation. We have earned international recognition through our affiliations with the International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors’ Associations (IFAWPCA) and the ASEAN Constructors Federation (ACF). We have also successfully hosted the 20 th , 29 th and 44 th IFAWPCA Conventions in 1983, 1998 and 2018 respectively. Through the memberships in IFAWPCA and ACF, the MBAM members are part of the international construction fraternity. MBAM is also a member of The Building Industry Presidents’ Council (BIPC), where members comprise of Presidents from Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM), Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (REHDA), Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM). The formation of BIPC is a quantum leap in terms of cooperation among the industry players in the country to look into the interest of the construction industry from a wide spectrum of trades. MBAM members are also from entities that are directly and indirectly linked to the construction industry. This includes specialist sub-contractors, building material suppliers, manufacturers and trading companies. With both local and international presence, MBAM is well poised to effectively represent the Malaysian construction industry as a single, unifying voice to the relevant government authorities as well as various organisations and bodies. I strongly believe this form of contracting will help make the construction industry more sustainable Mediation: The Way Forward MBAM has recently signed a pledge with the Building Materials Distributors Association of Malaysia (BMDAM) to promote mediation to resolve contractual disputes in the construction industry. In the same session, we also had a talk on the CIDB Form of Contract on Building Works 2022. I would like to thank CIDB for allowing us to revisit its earlier form, the CIDB 2000, and for their willingness to invest in the amendment. Under the Construction Industry Master Plan (CIMP), CIDB, with the industry stakeholders’ support, had successfully initiated and established construction courts and the Adjudication Act, contributing to a healthier construction industry. I strongly believe this form of contracting will help make the construction industry more sustainable. I am confident that the CIDB 2022 will have another positive impact on the construction industry. Our neighbouring country, Singapore, has strongly recommended collaborative contracts, which has been well received by the Singaporean construction players. MBAM sees a deeper involvement with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) MBAM will embark on several approaches to deepen its involvement and capitalise on the opportunities presented by collaborating with MOHE. MBAM hopes to work with MOHE to develop and implement accredited training and skill development programmes since the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) secretariat is now back under MOHE. Currently, MBAM is collaborating on work-based learning through internships for undergraduate students from Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). MBAM can help to address any skill gaps and ensure that the industry meets the evolving demands of the market, as well as to encourage local graduates to join the construction industry. As a board member of the Government-Industry TVET Coordination Body, MBAM’s role is to provide private-sector inputs towards the development and progress of the national TVET agenda. 70 th MBAM Anniversary Dinner Celebrations It also gives me great pleasure to welcome our Guest of Honour, Yang Amat Berbahagia Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, to the 70 th MBAM Anniversary Dinner. This year marks the 70 th anniversary of MBAM, and is a reminder of how the association has successfully positioned itself as an established, influential, and strong presence in the Malaysian construction industry. I hope that MBAM will continue to flourish and grow as we move forward towards our centennial celebrations in 2054.
