The first day of training is classroom training that focuses on technical knowledge for lifting activities, including regulatory legislation, knowing the roles and responsibilities of a lifting supervisor, understanding lifting activities and cranes, reading of load charts, calculations and lifting plans. The second day of training and assessment is conducted in the field with practical lifting activities. Trainees apply their technical knowledge into actual lifting actions, where communication with other lifting team members such as slingers, riggers, signalman and crane operators are carried out effectively and safely. Participants are required to individually develop their own lifting plan and Job Safety Analysis according to different scenarios given as part of the assessment. 60 MASTER BUILDERS JOURNAL #126Professional Development PD 61 MASTER BUILDERS JOURNAL #126Professional Development PD 21 SEPTEMBER 2022 MBAM Scholarship Award 2022 The MBAM Education Scholarship Fund 2022 held a brief scholarship award presentation on 21 September 2022 at MBAM. The purpose of the seminar is to have leading industry players share their knowledge in improving productivity by using machinery technology, while improving safety issues at the job site. The invited speakers for this Seminar were Potine Siv, Asia Sales and Application Manager of LOADRITE, and Felice Stocco, Industry Field Manager of Caterpillar. Potine Siv briefed participants on use of InsighHQ, a digital system to address bottlenecks in earthwork activities such as matching plant supply to demand, materials movements, productivity, operational performance and managing haul cycle breakdowns. The use of data can enable companies to track material movement, production forecasting, planning, and more. Furthermore, it also supports safety with use of data to identify problematic areas, reducing harm, reduce bad habits among machinery operators and to help in accident investigation. Felice Stocco presented on product innovations, sustainability, automation, site management applications and site efficiency tools. The use of rear and multiview cameras and radar technology in machinery can significantly improve job site safety. He told the audience that the transition to electrification of construction machinery such as electric and hybrid powertrains in excavators, dozers, and trucks promise to lower the total cost of ownership by 2030 to 2035. Additionally, remote control technology will improve the handling of hazardous activities, and also turns the role of the operator into a commander and transform machinery into robots. Overall, it proved to be a very informative Seminar. Chairman of the MBAM Machinery Resources Committee Ong Ka Thiam remarked on his intention for the committee to continue organising such machinery technology sharing sessions to continue raising awareness amongst members. It was attended by 28 participants. The trainer for the workshop was Major (Rtd) Leong Yee Keong, Senior General Manager in Environmental, Safety & Health Division of Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd. Chairman of MBAM Safety & Health Committee, Michael Yap, noted in his opening speech that there have been many accidents involving temporary works in the country recently and reports have shown that management failure was one of the major root causes of these accidents. The Department of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) also reports that insufficient consideration has been given to the management of temporary works, leaving projects open to risks; such as injuries or fatalities, the failure or collapse of both temporary and permanent works, damages to adjacent properties and the consequent delays and increased costs. As such, it is evident that the need to manage temporary works is vital as all temporary works are identified as high-risk activities in all construction projects. At the end of this workshop, participants knew more about safe management of temporary works including the roles and responsibilities of the project team from designing, planning, executing and interfacing with machinery and the legal requirements to manage them.
