May 2025 President’s Message
TARIFF IMPACT ON CONTRACTORS
The high tariff imposed by the United States of America on China could cause Chinese manufacturers to seek alternative markets, potentially increasing competition for local manufacturers. At the same time, the weaker ringgit caused by the lower exports as a direct result of the higher tariffs on Malaysia will mean that contractors will have to pay more for the same amount of materials they import even from countries other than the United States of America. The construction industry must remain vigilant and adaptive, considering the 90-day pause is a temporary relief while the ongoing challenges posed by tariffs on key materials remain in force.
INSIGHTS FROM BAUMA 2025
The world’s leading trade fair for construction machinery (BAUMA 2025) was held in Munich, Germany, from April 7 to 13. This event serves as a global platform showcasing the latest innovations in construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles, and construction equipment.
Joining CIDB in the visit, we gained insight into themes like networked construction and the integration of digital technologies into construction processes. Equipment like industrial crushers can be utilised as a sustainable construction method in redeveloped areas such as in serial construction to reuse and recycle the crushed materials for building foundation, all of which will contribute to resource conservation and waste reduction in the construction sector.
BAUMA 2025 significantly benefits the Munich economy by attracting a massive influx of International visitors, exhibitors and industry professionals, boosting local businesses, and generating substantial economic revenue. BAUMA 2025 was expected to receive not less than 800,000 visitors to the exhibition this year. By leveraging the knowledge and connections established during BAUMA 2025, CIDB Malaysia can drive the nation’s construction industry toward a more innovative and environmentally responsible future.
MBAM at the forefront of regional cooperation
The 47th Convention of the International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors’ Associations (IFAWPCA) took place from April 7 to 11, 2025, at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore. It was hosted by the Singapore Contractors Association Limited (SCAL). The theme “Embracing Construction of Tomorrow” spotlighted transformative technologies, sustainable construction practices, and collaborative frameworks critical to the sector’s evolution.
The Chief Delegate MBAM Vice President Mr. Yeoh Keong Yuan led a 17-man delegation engaged counterparts in high-level discussions, took part in technical site visits, and networking sessions. The convention reinforced MBAM’s role as a key player in regional construction dialogues, fostering international partnerships that facilitate knowledge exchange and joint ventures. It also provided valuable insights into emerging trends, helping Malaysian contractors stay competitive in a rapidly changing global environment.
