PRESIDENT MESSAGE – APRIL 2018

We are progressing to another lively month of April, as we will be organising the MBAM Badminton and Table Tennis Tournament 2018 on 21st April 2018 and the MBAM Safety and Health Conference on 24th– 25th April 2018. With these two key events for this month, I hope more members can come forward and show their support by joining the above mentioned events. These events will not only be beneficial for the enhancement of knowledge, it will also provide a platform for better relationship between MBAM’s members.

The following are the main events in March:-

45TH ACF COUNCIL MEETING

The Indonesian Contractors Association (ICA) chaired the 45th ASEAN Constructors’ Federation (ACF) Council Meeting that was hosted by the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA) on 9th March 2018 at The Shangri-la Hotel at the Fort, Manila, Philippines.  MBAM was represented by the MBAM Deputy President, Tan Sri A.K. Nathan, MBAM Secretary General, Mr Dennis Tan and I. Also present were IFAWPCA President cum MBAM Immediate Past President, Datuk Matthew Tee, MBAM Past Deputy President, Mr Aziz Bahaman and MBAM Executive Director, Ms Loh Mei Ling.

The meeting commenced with the official handover of chairmanship of ACF from the current ACF Chairman, Mr Nattaphorn Bhromsuthi of Thai Contractors Association (TCA) to the new ACF Chairman, Mr Joseph Pangalila of ICA. At the end of the meeting, the Council unanimously agreed that TCA will host the 46th ACF Council Meeting on 7th September 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand.  All ACF delegates will be invited to attend the opening ceremony of the IMPACT exhibition held on 6th September 2018 in Bangkok. The Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association (MCEA) has agreed to host the 47th ACF Council Meeting in Myanmar and the ICA will host the 48th ACF Council Meeting together with the ACF Special Conference in Indonesia in 2019.  

 

FUJIAN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION

The representatives from the Fujian Construction Industry Association, Mr Chen Wei Qun of Fujian Jian Geotechnical Engineering Co Ltd who is also the Chairman of Jian Zhuan Builders (M) Sdn Bhd together with his staff Mr Karl Ming Wang paid a courtesy visit to MBAM on 15th March 2018.

The discussions touched on construction activities in the local scene and Chinese contractors in the international scene. Projects undertaken by the Chinese contractors in the Malaysia and the types of construction methodologies adopted were briefly discussed. Challenges and barriers in the local construction industry were delved upon and to foster closer ties, MBAM invited, Jian Zhuan Builders (M) Sdn Bhd to join MBAM as a member.

Presenting the 60th MBAM Coffee Table Book as a token of appreciation

On 16th March 2018, MBAM Executive Director, Ms Loh Mei Ling, MBAM Assistant General Manager, Mr Michael Thong and MBAM Senior Manager, Ms Lee Siew Mei met representatives from the Alba Sourcing, Mr Junichi Shinozawa.  The meeting aimed to promote the Alba Sourcing digital forest/ 3D walker technology to MBAM members.  Also present at the meeting was Mr Kohi Oda, Global Navigator from the Tokyo SME Support Centre.  The said equipment is a state-of-art forest management system using 3D laser scanner which enable to create 3D mapping automatically.  The features of the equipment are ultra-light back-pack scanner (approximately 5 kg); accurate data collection and also short scanning time (approximately 10-20 minutes for 1ha).  A 3D mapping demo using the said scanner was presented to MBAM. 

The said technology is certainly useful for the construction industry. MBAM took the opportunity to invite Alba Sourcing to participate at our upcoming MBAM OneBuild Construction Exhibition to showcase their technology and product.     

 

TRAINING WORKSHOP ON MAINTENANCE OF INFRASTRUCTURE FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES BY ISTIC

Training Workshop on Maintenance of Infrastructure for Developing Countries organised by the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation (ISTIC) under the auspices of UNESCO in collaboration with The Institute of Engineers Malaysia Training Centre (IEMTC) was organised on 26th – 28th March 2018 at Furama Hotel, Bukit Bintang. The main objective of this training workshop is to provide participants with the knowledge and learning experiences in the planning, management and implementation of infrastructure maintenance. The event was attended by MBAM Council Member cum Deputy Chairman of Technical Committee, Mr Nalla Sundran, MBAM Manager, Mr Mohd Farhan and Mr Chuah Tiong Lin from VSL Engineers (M) Sdn Bhd.

MBAM was invited to be one of the panel speaker to present a paper on the topic “Project Maintenance”. The paper was presented by Mr Nalla Sundran. More than 40 participants from developing countries; Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Kenya, Maldives, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uganda and Malaysia attended the training workshop.

 

MEETING WITH MR TANGUY TERTRAIS FROM XL INDUSTRIES

Mr Tanguy Tertrais of XL Industries, a French bespoke manufacturer of access systems equipment like construction elevators, material hoist, mast climbing platform visited the Master Builders Association Malaysia on 27th March 2018 with the objective to promote their range of products into the Malaysian construction Industry. Through a video presentation he introduced the various specialized range of equipment manufactured by their company and the projects that used their equipment both in France and internationally. He highlighted the setup of the Singapore office to serve the ASEAN region. 

They shared their input and brief overview on the local construction market industry. It was proposed to XL Industries to participate in the MBAM OneBuild 2018 which will be held in conjunction with the 44th International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractor’s Associations (IFAWPCA) Convention to promote their products and in addition to join MBAM as a member. Both proposals were received favourably.

The opening ceremony of the International Construction Week 2018 was held on 27th March 2018 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.  Officiated by the Minister of Works, Malaysia, Y.B Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Bin Haji Yusof, ICW 2018’s objective was to raise awareness amongst industry players in the area of construction technology and innovation as part of the aim to improve the overall productivity and competitiveness of the industry.

The theme of “Achieving Peak Productivity” was timely as productivity is one of the strategic thrust of CITP. The theme was particularly relevant as the Malaysian construction industry continues to transform and prepare itself for the next leap of growth. During the opening ceremony, nine companies were recognised for achieving the 5-Star CIDB competitive rating for enhancement programme (SCORE), which enables companies to identify their level of performance and growth. ICW 2018 was organised from 27th March 2018 until 30th March 2018 featuring exhibitions, seminars and talks on the use of modern construction technologies such as Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM), new sustainable material and energy sources.

MBAM and CIDB co-organised the IBS Seminar at the CIDB Convention Centre on 28th March 2018 at CIDB Convention Centre. The opening ceremony was officiated by Tan Sri Dr. Ir. Ahmad Tajuddin Ali, Chairman of CIDB Malaysia on behalf of Y.B. Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Bin Haji Yusof, Minister of Works Malaysia who was unable to attend.

The IBS seminar saw presentations by six prominent speakers from both local and international construction scene. At the end of the seminar there was a forum session which the MBAM Council member cum the MIIE’18 IBS Seminar Organising Chairman, Datuk Ir. Kow Choong Ming acted as the moderator. He skillfully solicited many questions from the floor which were answered by all the speakers, keeping the forum lively and interactive. Next, CIDB General Manager, Mr Ahmad Farrin Bin Mokhtar presented mementos to the speakers and the moderators and in his closing speech he was appreciative of MBAM’s initiative in organizing the successful IBS seminar. He said that the Seminar has proved to be very beneficial for the participants judging from the large turnout of 325 participants for the opening and the IBS seminar.

On 31st March 2018, MBAM Deputy President, Tan Sri Dato’ A K Nathan organised the Personal Development Training at MBAM Training Centre. A total of 23 staff attended the half a day training to enhance the secretariat staff’s mindset in achieving and reaching more in their daily life in terms of personal and career aspect. During the training, Tan Sri Dato’ A K Nathan shared on the traits needed to ensure success in life and career such as the need to have passion, self-initiative, focus, determination, learning from mistakes, communication, being firm to principles, punctuality, time management and team work, among other critical values for success in the 3-hour programme. The training etched a positive outcome amongst the staff. We hope more of such training can be organised to enhance the capability of the staff thus increasing the productivity of the association.
