Turkish Demand for Plywood Skyrockets Amidst Earthquake Rebuilding Efforts The Republic of Türkiye is in the process of rebuilding itself after a disastrous earthquake hit the country in February 2023, leading to a rise in its construction industry and driving up demand for plywood. Alongside forestry regulations, lowering prices, and a growing yacht industry, Turkish imports of plywood have skyrocketed, and there are ample opportunities available for Malaysian exporters. Opportunity According to the Türkiye Earthquakes Recovery and Reconstruction Assessment (TERRA), the damage to Türkiye was estimated at US$103.6 billion – almost 9% of its GDP’s forecast in 2023. To comply with new construction codes for earthquake- resistant buildings, the country’s construction sector has become increasingly reliant on wood-based products, such as plywood. At the same time, Türkiye has been enacting forestry regulations that have slowed the growth of its lumber industry, while its yacht-building industry has been experiencing steady growth thanks to an increase in outdoor recreation trends. These factors, alongside a lowering global price of plywood, have caused a significant increase in Turkish plywood imports. In the first half of 2023, Turkish imports of plywood reached a value of US$137 million, a 143% increase from the same period in 2022. Its largest exporters were Russia and Latvia, while Malaysia ranked 6th highest with 6.2m3 of plywood being exported to Türkiye. This is a significant increase from previous years, with Turkish imports of Malaysian plywood going from US$223,000 in the first half of 2022 to US$3.54 billion in the same period, for 2023. The Way Forward According to Türkiye’s Forestry Products Importers Association (TORID), most of the country’s imports enquiries from local Turkish players on wood and wooden products, indicating high potential growth in business volume. Eight Turkish companies participated in the INSP Malaysian Wood Expo 2023 as buyers and have already placed orders for Malaysian plywood. Turkish participation in these events has also been facilitated by the Malaysia-Türkiye Free Trade Agreement (MTFTA), which provides easier access to the Turkish market for Malaysian exporters, and should be utilised to its fullest extent for future business arrangements. This article is based on an update to a Market Alert (MA) prepared by MATRADE Istanbul, and the information is correct at the time of the writing. MAs are available in MyExport, which can be accessed at www.matrade.gov.my For further information and enquiries, please contact MATRADE Istanbul at istanbul@matrade.gov.my. of plywood were from Russia, Latvia, and Vietnam. Malaysian plywood is still a relatively new source of import for Turkish businessmen in the industry, but Malaysia can still access the Turkish plywood market if it can offer competitive prices, in addition to supplying good-quality plywood products. Turkish demand for plywood will only continue to increase as the country rebuilds from the earthquake disaster and as its industries recover and grow. At the same time, Türkiye’s main exporter, Russia, continues to face market instability due to sanctions and the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. These facts present a great opportunity for Malaysian exporters to take advantage of rising demands and obtain a larger foothold in the Turkish plywood market. CICEE Southeast Asia 2023 Spearheads Expansion into the Region ExhibitionsCICEE For extreme weather—Weatherbond® with Quartz-Powered Technology INDUSTRY NEWS Nippon Paint has recently introduced its newly improved Weatherbond® series of exterior paints, which are specially formulated with innovative Quartz Technology, providing the strongest wall protection of up to 15 years against harsh weather—resisting colour fading, chalking and paint film damage. The Weatherbond® series includes Weatherbond®, Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss, Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme and Weatherbond® Ultimate. Yaw Seng Heng, Group Managing Director of Nippon Paint said, “As the leading coating expert, we acknowledge the climate change-induced events that have caused surface defects such as paint peeling, discoloration and high dirt pick-up, affecting both homeowners and property managers alike. These challenges can significantly impact the overall aesthetics and durability of buildings, resulting in increased maintenance costs and decreased property value." Aside from its durability, the advanced Weatherbond® series also features Sunblock Technology, which helps to reduce surface temperatures up to 5˚C cooler even in intense heat. Additionally, the Colour Care Technology ensures vibrant wall colours that endure over time, while the Micro Block Technology provides the hardest defence against fungus, algae and dirt pick-up. This is complemented by the Keep Clean Technology, which offers unrivalled resistance against dirt, alkaline substances, and efflorescence, maintaining the overall pristine appearance. The Weatherbond® Series now also includes Weatherbond® Ultimate, an ultra-premium product featuring cutting-edge Fibra Technology, which further strengthens the paint film, establishing a resilient barrier that acts as an impenetrable layer that safeguards against cracking, peeling and deterioration. Used in combination with the right wall preparation, a precise coating system, and the utilisation of sealers like Sealer 8100 Weatherbond® Sealer, the new Weatherbond® series sets a new standard in the performance and aesthetics of exterior wall paints. Site Safety Supervisor (SSS) Most construction works will involve a form of excavation, for foundations, sewers or drainage. These will vary in depth but are always a high-risk activity as they can be affected by diverse factors (such as rainwater, hot weather, adjoining structures, ground conditions and vibration). There have been many accidents in the country involving the collapse of slopes during excavation works or failure of the surrounding excavated area during excavation. Every year people are killed or seriously injured by collapses and falling material while working in excavations. Many accidents occur when the excavation appears in good condition, with its sides clean and self-supporting, and with no obvious hazards. To prevent recurrence of such accidents, good planning and correct preparation for excavations are essential. Apart from a complete risk assessment which must be undertaken to identify, eliminate or reduce the risk at the source before any excavation works begin; a designated person (preferably of supervisory level) must be trained and be aware of factors to consider when planning excavations, the setting up of the work and safe working methology. This Trained Person in Excavation Training provides an essential knowledge to participants in risk assessment including practical guidelines such as the 5/4/3/2/1 rule of excavation and elements such as soil composition, depth, support structures and emergency evacuations in excavation works.
